Astronauts are people too

After reading Kamanin’s diary, I found many interesting “facts” about the life, service, and flights of Soviet cosmonauts.
I will say right away, maybe someone will not like this post, but our Heroes were also people, and they clearly did not want to walk along the line with an eye to their superiors.

To put it mildly, he was a mischievous or military "stray", was German Titov. Kamanin often mentions his "exploits" and family problems.
October 18 (1961)
... L.I. Goreglyade told me what number Hermann Titov soaked in Romania. A motorcade, accompanied by motorcyclists, was driving from Brasov to Ploiesti. Herman drove Brasov in an open car, but outside the city according to the plan he had to transfer to a closed car. The road to Ploiesti passed through a mountain range, at the time of stopping the convoy (for Titov's transfer from one car to another) it was raining lightly, it was dusk, visibility was poor. A minute after the column started moving, Leonid Ivanovich thought that Titov was driving in front of one of the motorcycles. He could not believe his eyes, but when his car drove closer, he finally became convinced that instead of transferring to a locked car, Herman got behind the wheel of a motorcycle. When I told Vershinin about this case, he was all white and could not believe the possibility of such frivolity on the part of Titov for a long time.

Everyone knows the story of the fall of Gagarin in Foros, and later made a lot of noise.
November 14th
Today, more than four hours engaged with the astronauts. Everyone was present except for Bykovsky and Belyaev. The first two hours in the party order dealt with the personal affairs of Gagarin and Titov. The Air Force Command had no intention to engage in the analysis of the behavior of Gagarin and Titov at a resort in the Crimea, and the latter was also in Moscow and Romania. The reason for the discussion was the statement of Gagarin to the party organization of the CPC with a request to consider his behavior at the resort and take appropriate decisions. Speakers Gagarin and Titov, basically, correctly reported on their behavior at the resort. Recognized cases of alcohol abuse, frivolous treatment of women and other misconduct.Yura reliably described the circumstances of his injury, but, apparently caring for the peace of Vali, argued that, entering the room from which he jumped, he did not know that nurse Anya was there and that he only wanted to play a trick on his wife, hiding from her Although I am convinced that the motive for visiting the room was different, I did not insist on my own. Gagarin’s version cannot be considered absolutely unbelievable, and it somewhat alleviates the incident itself and will not be a cause for discord in the family. All the astronauts spoke about in this spirit: "Gagarin and Titov behaved lightly; they forgot what they now became and had no right to do such nonsense." Especially got Titov. They said that he was arrogant, detached from the team, did not report on trips abroad and on the work of the 22nd Congress, etc. Gagarin and Titov (the latter to a lesser extent) recognized the criticism of the comrades as fair and promised not to allow such mistakes and nonsense in the future.

Again, big trouble with German Titov. According to Gagarin, yesterday at about eleven in the morning Titov was returning home from Moscow. In Izmailovo, at the trolleybus stop, two women raised their hands with a request to give them a lift. Titov stopped the car and said that he was going to Schelkovskoe highway, and then - to the right. One woman said that she was not on the way, and the second asked to give her a lift to the metro station. May Day street is poorly lit; Titov was driving at high speed and late noticed a bunch of old asphalt and stones on the road - he braked, but the car hit the stones with a chuck and jumped over them. Herman got off with light bruises, and his fellow traveler, apparently, received more serious injuries, but she had no blood or other noticeable signs of bruises. The girl herself got out of the car, waited for a taxi and drove away. Titov overtook his car in tow in the garage of the CPC and went home to sleep. At three o'clock in the night at the Titov's apartment, the investigators of the GUNSHOP arrived at the TsPK - it turned out that the girl, before reaching the Sklifosovsky hospital, died in a taxi.
The day before, there was another incident with Titov. A drunk motorcyclist allegedly attacked his car (the driver was at the wheel). Despite a number of auto accidents that had previously happened with Titov, and despite the suggestions of the bosses and the penalties received, he continues to drink and meet with women and endless violations of the rules of driving a car. A few days ago I had a very serious conversation with him, I directly told Herman, that he insisted on dismissing him from the post of deputy commander of the detachment and that only the weakness of Vershinin had “saved” him. I do not believe the version of yesterday’s incident, as presented by Gagarin from the words of Titov. Apparently, he put this girl in his car not at the bus stop or for the purpose of a ride. However, I will not guess ...
Gagarin, Nikolaev and Titov (with patches on their chins) arrived. So far, it is well established, and Titov himself confirmed that he was not quite sober behind the wheel (he drank 2-3 hours before the incident). Today at 5:00 the doctors recorded: "Sober, but with traces of alcohol." Titov wrote a report on the incident, he writes that until 22 o'clock he was with the chairman of the Krasnopresnensky district executive committee.
June 29.
... It can be considered proven that Titov had never met Fomenkova before and did not know her, but put her in a car at the bus stop at her request. Titov allocated 150 rubles for the funeral of Fomenkova, and Novikov promised Ivanov to arrange his grandson in the Suvorov school. Titov, apparently, will not be judged, but his moral guilt in the death of a 33-year-old woman is enormous: he got behind the wheel of a drunken driving and was driving at high speed at night along a poorly lit street.
30 June.
About an hour yesterday I spoke with Vershinin about the discipline of space pilots and some other issues. Marshal confirmed the well-known position for a long time that our positive influence on astronauts is not enough, and the pernicious influence of the upper strata associated with receptions, meetings, drinks and praises continues. Vershinin allowed to dismantle the case of Titov in the party order and agreed to the order of the CPC on the strict punishment of Titov.

July 2
In the afternoon I was at a meeting of the party organization bureau of the first cosmonaut corps. They examined the case of German Titov. The speakers were Novikov, Belyaev, Nikolaev, Gagarin, Popovich and me; Ponomareva, Bykovsky, Volynov, Zaikin and Kuznetsov supported us. In the three years that have passed since the brilliant flight into space, Titov has done so much nonsense and mistakes that very drastic measures are needed in the last attempt to keep him from misbehavior. The comrades angrily, right in the face, told Herman the bitter truth: “I lost my mind from the team, you live badly with Tamara, you’ve got a nod”, you make a lot of dubious acquaintances, you drink a lot, you get drunk, you often break traffic rules disgrace all astronauts and harm the cause to which we all dedicated our lives. "There were many other reproaches and warnings, including the following: "I took off very high, but if you lose the trust of the collective and the people, you can fall very low." I told Titov with all of them: “By your actions, you have already placed yourself outside the party and outside the team of cosmonauts. There is every reason to exclude you from the party and deprive you of all titles - deputy, hero, cosmonaut, lieutenant colonel ..." Only the Soviet people, he knows the whole world. The disgrace of Titov will be the disgrace of all astronauts, the disgrace of our people. We cannot allow this, and we will make one more, last attempt to leave Titov both in the party and in the cosmonaut detachment. All voted unanimously for a severe reprimand to Titov. On the line of battle we will lower it in the post, we will forbid performances, visits to receptions and driving. I ordered Kuznetsov to subordinate Titov to Beregovoi and transfer him to the mode of preparation for the flight on the Soyuz. This is done not to make Titov fly one of the first on the Soyuz, but in order to restore and save him as an astronaut.
July 7 (1963)
I went to the apartment to the Titovs, had a long conversation with Tamara. All my worst assumptions were confirmed.Herman drinks a lot and often, didn’t spend the night at home several times, while driving a car, he behaves like a bad man. Tamara claims that he can not trust the steering wheel. He drives at very high speeds, gets offended when he is overtaken, tries to outrun his “offender” and often changes his route for this purpose. Then Herman came, he said that he would be able to correct the matter with his own forces and restore confidence in himself.

On the observations of the general, in whom some of Titov's weaknesses are pointed, Tamara Vasilyevna says with restraint: This is very subjective. I, however, respect Nikolay Petrovich. And then, keep a diary - after all a lot of work (imagine, you have to sit and write an hour and a half or two after a working day). But his conclusions, I repeat, are very subjective. We had no problems in the family. Everything was balanced. Herman was a zinger, and I was calm. And, probably, with this calmness, I sometimes stopped a little his boiling. Moreover, like all of us, with age he himself became wiser and more balanced.

There were problems in the family of V. Tereshkova-A. Nikolaev (one year after the wedding they wanted to get a divorce), Pavel and Marina Popovich ... A.Leonov, too, sometimes violated traffic rules, discipline and was very sharp on the tongue.
