China has earned a giant solar-powered smog cleaner
Having breathed a lot of poisoned air in the period of industry formation, now the inhabitants of the Middle Kingdom do not spare funds for innovative projects to improve the environment. The other day in the city of Xi'an, a hybrid smog absorption unit worth $ 2 million has reached its design capacity. It occupies 10 square meters. km area and consists of a huge pipe and an array of solar collectors.
The main advantage of the prototype of the “Sian anti-smog” is that it works in a passive mode. A huge array of glass roofs on the ground serves to trap the sunlight that heats the air and it flows upward by gravity upwards - into a 18-meter-high pipe. In the pipe, gases pass through a series of filters, so conditionally clean air enters the atmosphere.
Conventionally, because official data on the results of filtering has not yet been published. The unit began operation in January 2018; it transmits 5-8 million m3 of air per day and, at the peak of pollution in the winter periods, heating showed stable operation. Indirect data from pollution sensors in neighboring areas indicate a decrease in the concentration of solid particles in the air by 19% in the last months of winter. It sounds interesting, but this is a very low figure, if we evaluate the economic benefits of the project.
The experts have many questions for the creators of the Sian anti-smog - in particular, they are interested in the ability to purify the air from sulfur dioxide and the effect of such a “vacuum cleaner” on the ecology and the movement of air masses in the city. To normalize ecology in Xi'an, at least a dozen of such towers are needed, but their construction will cost too much even without taking into account the allocation of huge useful land areas.
