Bicycle is a fairly efficient vehicle. On special track models, you can reach speeds of up to ninety kilometers per hour (such indicators are available, of course, not for ordinary people). How fast a person does not go, the main thing is to slow down in time at the slightest danger. The main part of the bike is the brakes.
What it is?
Thanks to the brake, the vehicle can quickly reduce its speed. There are two types of such devices. They are divided into disc brakes and rims. Each has its positive and negative sides. Depending on the type of mechanism, quality and proper installation, the stopping distance may vary in one way or the other. To ideally install the brakes, you need to take into account many factors.
Rim brakes, or V-breaks, are suitable only for citybikes (urban), which are simply not designed for high speeds and instantaneous recoil. They do not have to quickly brake.They are usually put on all store bikes, as they are cheap and easy to use.
Disc brakes are characterized by high performance, good performance and complex design. They, of course, are more expensive than rims. To install them or not, you need to decide on the basis of riding style. If you get a bike to work, to the store, drive through the parks, then the usual ones will do. And if the riding style is extreme: rugged terrain, mountains or woods, then you already need disc brakes on the bike. They are harder to maintain and need to be adjusted before the first ride.
Disc brake device
Disc brakes are activated by pressing the handle. The disk itself is installed with the wheel near the hub, it is fixed there and moves simultaneously with it. This is one of the main parts of the whole mechanism. The rotor (disk) is a braking surface. Rubbing against it brake pads, which are two rubber plates. One of them is mobile, and the second is motionless. Only in very expensive mechanisms can two mobile parts be found. Brake pads are located in a device called a caliper. It is mounted directly above the rotor.There are also traffic controllers, with the help of which the stopping system can be adjusted beyond the need.
Everything is put into action, as with the rim brakes, by simply pressing a finger on the lever. The brake cable, which runs into the rubber sleeves, acts on the caliper and causes the pads to contract. The system is a bit more complicated, but in general it resembles V-breaks.
The most important and required quality is braking power. The bigger it is, the better. Of course, the drive is clearly higher, which gives the cyclist an advantage in many ways. Those who ride with the usual rim brakes know that it is necessary to press the handle in advance, since at high speed the stopping distance will be several meters. Disc brakes solve this problem by ninety percent. The only thing is, if you brake sharply, the wheel will block sharply, and the tires will “scratch asphalt” by inertia. Such extreme stops can quickly lead to alopecia of rubber.
Positive side disc brakes
Everything has its pros and cons. If riding style requires disc brakes on a bike, then they should be installed.Before that, you need to know the positive and negative sides of this mechanism.
Also an important plus for avid cyclists - unpretentiousness to the weather. Sometimes in the life of an athlete appears black bar, and it falls under the rain. Wet roads and paths are blurred, and it all turns into a mud mash. The disadvantage of V-breaks is that all the dirt sticks to the rim and accumulates in places where the pads are clamped. As a result, after some time, the functioning of the brake deteriorates and then stops altogether. The worse the conditions, the more you need confidence in the health and reliability of the stopping mechanism. The fact is that disc brakes do not have this disadvantage at all due to the fact that the rotor is mounted on the hub. Dirt does not stick to it, and therefore the mechanism functions well.
Also the trouble with the rim brakes is that the surface on which the pads rub against should be perfectly flat. In real life, there are very few rims without the so-called “eights”, so you have to relax the levers a bit, which reduces the sensitivity of the brake and, again, its effectiveness.The disc is mounted directly on the sleeve, so bend it is unrealistic. In addition, wheel spokes protect it from lateral damage. The braking surface is perfectly flat, so the process of stopping the vehicle will be more successful.
The advantages of disc brakes can also be attributed to the fact that the shape of the rim does not affect anything. It’s no secret that factories make rims of different shapes. Some have better contact with the pads, some - no. Again, there is no such problem with disks.
Disc brakes drawbacks
There are no negative sides to these mechanisms, but there are drawbacks. One of them makes installation more problematic - it is the presence of special mounts. Installing disc brakes requires certain parts. If they are not, then such a mechanism cannot be installed on this bike.
Another drawback that hits the pocket of the bike owner is the high price of the goods. To install on your bike a brand new disc brake, you need to pay a tidy sum. Also not suitable for road bike drive. These super lightweight bikes that do not have anything extra do not need a heavy disc brake.Relatively large mass is another drawback of this design.
Disc brakes: replacement pads

How do they differ from each other? In hydraulics, unlike mechanics, brake fluid or oil acts as a force, which presses against the walls of the caliper pistons.Thanks to this, the pads smoothly and simultaneously act on both sides at once. It is hydraulics that gives the maximum braking effect.
Another plus is that such a brake can be pressed with just one finger. At the same time very little effort is applied, so this system is convenient. Many people are afraid that oil may leak, but this happens in very rare cases.
