Gerda Gottlieb was born in the family of a priest. After graduation, she moved to Copenhagen in 1902 by enrolling at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

Educated, Gerda Wegener traveled with her husband to Western Europe, finally settling in 1912 in Paris.

And her equally talented husband, who was also an artist, practically ceased his work. Wearing women's clothes, he became a model for his wife. This role came to Einar Wegener to his liking - he wore ladies' dresses and was introduced to the guests by his sister Gerda Wegener under the name of Lily Elbe.
In the end, he decided to change his gender. To this end, the Wegener couple moved to Germany, where Einar had the first sex change operation in history.
When this fact was made public, the king of Denmark in October 1930 dissolved the marriage of Gerda and Einar.
Einar underwent several more corrective sex reassignment operations. During the fifth of them, he passed away.

After the death of Einar Gerda, Wegener married the Italian officer Fernando (Nando) Porta in 1931, with whom she emigrated to Morocco. The marriage soon fell apart and ended in divorce in 1936. Two years later, Gerda Wegener returned to Denmark, where she held her last exhibition in 1939 and died on July 28, 1940.
