How a coin deprived the USSR of medals in the European Football Championship

Penalty penalties were not always the way in which the winner could be determined if there was a draw in the main and extra time of the match. Once upon a time this question, the question of the winner of the match, was determined to be much less expensive - the match judge just ... tossed a coin.

Now, when millions are spinning in football, when watching games on television costs a lot of money, when even everyone plays a small tournament without a break, when football has turned into a successful business, of course, it is impossible to imagine such a turn of events. But then, in 1968, the outcome of the European Championship semifinal between the national teams of the USSR and Italy was decided that way. Just imagine for a second: the semi-final of the European Championship, the main competition of the continent - and a coin! Which, among other things, is thrown at the referee!
USSR national team in that semifinal match looked better than the Italians, but the match ended in a goalless draw. According to the rules of the tournament, in such a situation it was necessary to cast lots.
Now the fate of the match had to be determined by lot. The captains of the teams gathered in the judges' room - defenders Albert Shesternyov and Giacinto Facchetti, three judges who worked at the match, and the UEFA representative Spaniard Augustin Pujol. The coach of the USSR national team Mikhail Yakushin was also able to be in it. About what happened, he later recalled:
“By hook or by crook, I also made my way into this room. The foreign participants to the draw looked at me in bewilderment, but, not having guessed who I was, started the official procedure.
First, it was determined by which coin to cast lots - Italian or French. Chose the French. Pujol asks Shesternyov which side of the coin he chooses. During this time I managed to carefully examine the coin and noticed that one of its sides, called the “figure”, was slightly convex. As a child, I was fond of playing "heads and tails," I realized that the chances that the coin would fall upwards in a convex part were much greater.
I advise Shesternyov: “Choose a figure!”. He stands aloof. I told him: "Figure!". But he is in a state of prostration and hears nothing. He was tired of waiting for him, and he turned to Facchetti - choose, they say. The Italian immediately realized what was going on and said: "Figure!". Pujol threw a coin, she fell to the floor, and Facchetti’s solemn cry came: "Figure!". The Italians reached the final of the European Championship. ”

Happy Facchetti returned to the field to shout out loudly: “Italy!” And the San Paolo stadium exploded with cries of delight. The Italian team reached the final of the European Championship in 1968 and beat Yugoslavia, taking first place.
Yakushin, according to the stories of Pshenichnikov, then went to the bar and got drunk properly, realizing that defeat was even like that! - maybe it costs him big trouble.
And the USSR national team, alas, became the only team in the entire history of the European championships that was defeated with a coin that fell out of the wrong side ... In the match for third place (then the rules of the European championships assumed such a match) the team lost to the English without medals.
