How Soviet scouts hijacked a German tank
This story happened on the night of July 8/9, 1943, when a group of intelligence officers, commanded by Captain Zakrevsky, set off for the "language". It was about a village called Ponyri, which will later go down in history as the place of one of the most stubborn battles of all time of the Great Patriotic War.
The scouts hoped that, since the previous day was, let's say, very intense, they would be able to catch some officer from the German repair crews. But that night, as luck would have it, the repairmen did not work, so I had to grab the “tongue” not near my positions, but to stomp into the German rear.
On the way, they came across a German tank, and the staff was also on the move. A light was burning inside the tank, but there was no one around. And inside there were maps and important documents. Here the thought was born - why not to drive this tank to your own?
Given that the scouts were from a tank corps and in the technique understood, the idea was not at all fantastic. To take the tank took Lieutenant Kosik. And then there was the roar of a tank engine, night, shooting, chase, frightened Germans.
True, it was still impossible to drive into its location nicely, as the tank stalled about 400 meters from our trenches. I had to take about the tank defense and send messengers for the tractor. But everything ended successfully, the scouts returned and hijacked the tank.
And then miracles began.
It turned out that the scouts had captured a new tank, which our fighters had not yet seen. Of course, in the reports you could just write "German tank". But this is not cool, it was necessary more precisely.
Tanks were made classified by guns. In this it was short, but at the same time 75 mm. It seemed to look like a T-4. But according to intelligence reports there was information about a new German tank with a 75-mm cannon and it was called “Panther”. Since the "Panther" sounded cooler than the usual T-4, in a report and presentation to the award and recorded "captured tank" Panther ".
Well, and then about it all visited journalists. And then the story of the real capture of the tank turned into a heroic hijacking "Tiger". However, journalists often fan stories. But the stolen tank was real. And so Pz-IV he actually was, "Panther" or "Tiger" - this is not such a difference.
