How to blow glass

I have been to various workshops and various factories, saw how jam and metal are made, saw fishing on an industrial scale, and how cannabis is checked, and yesterday I was in an amazing place - in an art glass workshop. Egor - master glassblower arranged for bloggers of Petrograd communityspbblogan excursion to his workshop, where he from scratch creates wonderful and beautiful things that anyone can do under his leadership.
1. Full sell!

Our acquaintance with Egor began with a small introductory word of the master. He told us that he was self-taught, he studied on video from the Internet, there is no domestic literature on glass as such, so we had to study Western. With Russian masters from the Stieglitz Academy, for example, communication also did not work out, because Those old fartists believe that if they take him to work or to study with him, he will find out all the secrets of the craft from them and run away to create his own company, thereby creating competition for them. In the end, Egor did not lay down his arms and did not go to the West,how many could do, but after receiving a few lessons in practice from an art university teacher, then he began to create with his own hands, creating 3 stoves and preparing the necessary base.
2. The basis is glass, of course. Egor buys American, because there are plenty of flowers, it is of high quality, and in Russia everything with this raw material is bad, it is not enough and not enough. Glass is purchased either in the form of similar sheet plates, or in the form of cubes, which is basically all the same, because everything is melted in the oven.

3. Furnaces are perhaps the most important part of the process. There should be at least three of them: glass melting, in which a temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius is maintained, a furnace for heating billets, as well as stools for cooling finished products.

4. All 3 ovens are electric, adjustable by this simple shield. By the way, the workshop is located in the building of the Union of Artists, and this is awesome. In addition to this glass workshop there are also others.

5. The furnace "cuckoo" got its name for the sliding doors, resembling a birdhouse))

6. The temperature there is decent, the furnace is used to heat the product during operation. I couldn’t get inside, it was hot, but Yegor said that they and their friends put an action camera there, wrapped it in cooling rags, and took some cool photos. The fire is the same!

8. Liquid glass is taken from a tube from a glass-melting furnace and the process of creating blanks for the product begins. In our case it is a vase!

9. It takes quite a bit of glass, because a lot of it is simply not necessary.

10. Then on a metal surface you need to bring the blank to the desired shape.

11. Glass is hot, and it means you can do anything with it, including to inflate!

12. Once again we dip the billet into the furnace and grab an additional amount of liquid glass, it is necessary to move on to the next furnace, in which all the action will take place.

13. Egor goes to the "Kukushka", in which the glass is blown out and maintained in the right shape.

14. So far this is just a blank for a vase, that is, a transparent glass on which a layer of colored glass will be applied on.

15. Blowing continues until it becomes clear that the disc is ready.

16. Then, when the disc is fully prepared, any colored glass comes into your own taste, in our case it is a 4-color blank from which the vase will be created.As you can see, our pig literally stuck to the multicolored blank and is already sent to the furnace.

17. In order for the blank and the blank to take the desired shape, they need to be combined, as it were, by bending the molten glass around the blank.

18. Bent, now you need a dental forceps or any other suitable tool to connect the edges of the workpiece with each other.

19. This is done several times by sending the product into the kiln, then again bending and joining the edges, until it becomes clear that the blank and the colored blank are one!

20. Vintage scissors Egor creates the bottom of a vase, as if squeezing the glass.

21. And then what? Further long and hard to blow, melt, until you understand that the wall thickness is already necessary. By the way, as you can see, the stove is on gas. One such container lasts for 1.5 days on average. Due to the fact that the room is small, there is no possibility to store gas here, so every couple of days you have to refuel at the nearest gas station.

22. Molding is when a wet newspaper is shaped into the shape of the product. A freezing glass is spinning around the newspaper, it cools down, and at the same time it acquires the necessary shape.

24. Again, we need to dip our product in a glass melting furnace in order to apply a layer of glass to make it glossy, as well as for strength.

25. And re-molding. In general, the process is clear and simple - blow, cool, shape, cool. But at the same time, all this is very difficult, and it requires the attentiveness and experience that you get by making mistakes and achieving results. As with everything, however. Creative and interesting work, it was not for nothing that Yegor stopped being an office plankton and began to work with his hands, abruptly.

26. Here the product is already with an extra layer of glass that we recently inflicted, is sent back to the furnace.

27. It seems the master realized that it was time to pull the product. This is done in a rather tricky way - the tube, with the product at the end, quickly turns around its axis, making several turns, thereby stretching to the desired dimensions.

28. Then, in order to make the neck of the vase, you need to attach such a thing (on the left) to the bottom in order to have something to hold the product.

29. In the meantime, on the other hand, the future vase throat is created with pliers, as if simply expanding it, while the glass is liquid.

thirty.Going to the oven a few more times, then expanding again, and voila, the elegant neck of the vase is ready!

31. The master and his product. In fact, red is yellow, and pale blue is the color closer to blue. When the product has cooled, it will take proper color.

32. It's time to cut that thing from the bottom of the product, we no longer need it.

33. After all, the product is sent to the furnace, in which the temperature is maintained for a long time +517 degrees, and then lower, lower, lower, it is necessary for the glass to gradually cool, otherwise it will simply crack and the product will cease to exist on it. The vase created at us will reach room temperature in 8-9 hours, but we will not see it anymore)

34. Here, similar to our vase, are already on the stove's lid. Diverse, beautiful, you can say - each is unique in its own way. Pay attention to the round gizmos on the bottom of the VAZ - these are the remnants of those pieces that were cut off in photo No. 32, in order to remove them, Egor later goes to another workshop, where everything is cleaned and polished by grinding. Vase is ready!

35. Broken pots that were in electric ovens that had become unusable due to the fact that electricity was cut off in the building and everything was beaten.
