India handed over to Sri Lanka a patrol ship

On October 21, 2017, a ceremony was held in Colombo (Sri Lanka) to introduce the patrol ship CG 60 Suraksha, which became its largest unit, to the Sri Lankan Coast Guard Sri Lankan Coast Guard. Suraksha is a former coast guard patrol ship CGS 36 Varuna of India, transferred to India on 5 September in the form of military assistance to Sri Lanka.

The CGS 36 Varuna is one of the nine 1,180-ton 74-meter patrol ships of the Indian Coast Guard of the India built in the 1980s of the Vikram type. The Varuna patrol ship was built at the Indian state shipyard Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai and commissioned by the Indian Coast Guard in February 1988. For the past ten years, it was used by the Coast Guard and the Indian Navy as 1st squadron of training ships of the Indian Navy.
Earlier, India transferred another Vikram type patrol ship, the CGS 41 Varaha, to the Sri Lankan Navy.It was transferred to long-term lease in 2006, joining the Sri Lankan Navy as the P 622 Sagara, and in 2015 it was finally bought at the residual value by the Sri Lankan side. In 2008, India also leased the Navy Sri Lankan patrol ship CGS 39 Vigraha, which was part of the Sri Lankan fleet as the P 623 Sayurala, but in 2011 it was returned to India.
Earlier in 2000, the 1900-ton 101-meter patrol ship P 54 Sarayu (of the Sukanya type) was transferred from the Indian Navy to Sri Lanka, which is part of the Sri Lankan Navy as the P 620 Sayura.
The coast guard of Sri Lanka, created in 2010 under the subordination of the Ministry of Defense of Sri Lanka, until recently had only boats, and the Suraksha received now became the first patrol ship in its structure. In 2017, the Sri Lankan government allocated $ 180 million for the construction of three 85-meter patrol ships for the coast guard at the national shipyard Colombo Dockyard PLC.
