The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) announced the postponement of the launch date of the Chandrayaan-2 mission from October 2018 to January 2019. ISRO also decided to change the type of media used. Initially, Chandrayaan-2 was planned to be launched using a GSLV Mk.II. However, now for launch will be used medium class carrier GSLV Mk.III.

According to the ISRO representatives, the reason for the transfer of the Chandrayaan-2 launch is the identified technical problems. This is not the first time shift of the mission. Chandrayan-2 was supposed to go into space in April, but then the ISRO management decided to conduct additional tests of the apparatus and its scientific equipment.

Chandrayan-2 consists of three main components: the orbital module, the descent module and the small lunar rover. Their total mass is 3250 kg, which is much more than the previous Indian interplanetary probes Chandrayan-1 and Mangalyan (also known as MOM), each of which weighed 1,300 kg.

The orbital module will be launched into the polar 100 km orbit.Its scientific "stuffing" includes seven instruments - including high-resolution cameras, X-ray fluorescence and infrared spectrometer, as well as radar. As for the descent vehicle, in addition to cameras and an altimeter, a seismometer will be installed on board, as well as tools for determining the thermal characteristics of the lunar surface and measuring plasma characteristics.

By its dimensions, the Indian moon rover will resemble the American rover Sojourner. Its mass will be 20 kg, and the equipment must include a pair of navigation chambers and two instruments for studying the properties of the lunar regolith. According to the calculations of engineers, the operation time of the landing gear and the Lunokhod will be about 15 days, and the orbiter will be able to study the Moon for at least a year.
