The death of the rocket boat of the Indonesian Navy Rencong as a result of a fire at Sorong (West Papua), 09/11/2018 (c) IMI 3
According to the reports of the Indonesian Navy and the Indonesian media, the Rencong missile boat, part of the forces of the newly formed 3rd Navy of the Indonesian Navy and based on Sorong, was on patrol of coastal waters. At about 07.00 am on September 11, the boat, which was 20 miles from the base, began to move to Sorong to replenish the supply of fresh water. At about 08.15, when the gas turbine engine of the main course was started (the boat was equipped with a combined diesel-gas turbine power plant according to the CODOG scheme) General Electric LM2500 (licensed South Korean production) the gas turbine failed, followed by a fire in the engine room. The efforts to fight the fire failed, and the fire spread throughout the ship. The boat anchored off Iofdoif Island 8 miles from Sorong, but the intensification of the fire forced the commander to order the abandonment of the ship due to fear of the possibility of an explosion of ammunition. The personnel were taken by other boats of the Indonesian Navy, and the Rencong was completely burned out and sank at about 12.45 on 11 September.
Rencong was one of the four types of Mandau type missile boats built in 1979-1980 for the Indonesian Navy under Masan (Changwon) contract in 1975 by the South Korean branch of Korea Tacoma Marine Industries of the American shipbuilding company Tacoma Boatbuilding Company according to the American project PSMM Mk 5 (Dagger type; before eight such boats were built for the South Korean Navy). Indonesian boats of this type have a total displacement of 274 tons, a length of 50.2 m, a width of 7.3 m and a draft of about 2.3 m. The two-shaft power plant according to the CODOG scheme includes two diesel engines of small strokes MTU 1V 331 TC81 with a capacity of 1,120 liters each. with. and the gas turbine of the main stroke LM 2500 with a power of 25,000 hp, the full stroke speed under the turbine is up to 41 knots. The armament includes one 57-mm avrtilleriyskuyu Bofors DP70 Mk 1, one 40-mm artillery Bofors L / 70, two 20-mm artillery Rheinmetall and four anti-ship missiles MBDA Exocet MM38 (apparently, there were no missiles on the boat at the time of death) .Three other boats of this type continue to remain in the ranks of the Indonesian fleet.
Recall that this is not the first incident with the death of ships and boats of the Indonesian Navy in recent years. In particular, on December 2, 2017 in the Strait of Malacca, in a storm after an engine failure, the 150-ton Sibarau Indonesian Navy sentry boat sank (tail number "847", a former Australian-type Attack built in 1968). In May 2016, crashing into the hull of a sunken ship, Sumatra suffered an accident and sank the corvette of the Indonesian Navy Pati Unus (tail number "384", a former small anti-submarine ship of the GDR project 1331). In November 2013, as a result of a strike on a concrete pier, the middle landing ship Teluk Peleng (tail number "584", also a former ship of the GDR fleet) sank. On September 28, 2012, in Banyuwangi (East Java), just before entering the tests, the Klewang all-composite rocket trimaran (side number "625") of the X3K project, completed for the Indonesian Navy, burnt down.
