The longest shift in the history of "Artek" - from 1941 to 1945

The second summer shift of 1941 was special for Artek: for the first time, children from the western regions of Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, and the Baltic republics who had recently joined the Soviet Union came to the camp. Many did not speak Russian, so accompanying guides went with each group. There were children from Moscow, Leningrad, Simferopol and other Russian-speaking cities. No one then suspected that this shift would be the longest for the camp.

The first group, from Estonia, settled in the Nizhny camp on 19 June. The leaders - the hottest time. Place, form squads, give form, learn songs that sing near the fire. The opening shift was scheduled for June 22. At 17:00 on the campfire square "Nizhny" (now the camp "Sea").

In the morning, as usual, was charging. Then line, breakfast, swimming, volleyball and lunch. Everything went according to schedule. The children did not know that airplanes with crosses had been bombing their homes for several hours. And after the "Absolute" (as they call it a quiet hour) Levitan's voice came from the loudspeakers.War!
The opening of the shift still took place. Raised the flag. No songs, no dancing. Pioneer bonfire is not diluted: blackout.
By the end of the day, alarmed telegrams from their parents fell. Local already in the morning took their children. Moscow, Leningrad fathers and mothers rushed in next. The rest of the pioneers dispersed in small groups with the counselors.
And what could the children of Chisinau or Tallinn do, where the battles were already rattling?
“We felt terrible happened. But the days in the camp passed as always: we swam, rode a boat, played and sang. However, at night we had to be on duty at the tower at the seashore. Fours on duty for two hours. We had the password "Moscow Red". We had to watch that no one entered the camp from the sea. ”

On July 1, a new chief, Gury Yastrebov, was introduced on the emergency line of the camp. The Izvestia journalist, he was treated at a dacha near Artek. As soon as the war began, Guriy Grigorievich received a party task - to evacuate the Artek people away from the front.
In the camp "Lower" buses were filed. It was decided to send 200 children from the western regions of the country to the Mtsyri sanatorium near Moscow. Here, in Firsanovka, the estate of his grandmother, Lermontov wrote a famous poem. Children from Latvia and Lithuania have already settled in Mtsyri, whom the war found on their way to Artek.
Contrary to the unshakable Artek rules, the shift was not closed. I had no time. But they lowered the flag and took it with them.

At the Simferopol station, they waited a long time for trucks with bedding to arrive. I had to delay the departure of the train. In wartime, for this they give to the tribunal. But then the children ... Trucks drove onto the platform, and the loading went right through the windows of the cars. By the way, not a single set of state-owned Artek linen was lost during the entire war.
Firsanovka, the height of summer. The flag is raised again. Again in the furnace - running to charge. Just like in peacetime. Anti-aircraft guns bristled up from the wood into the sky. Only in the neighboring field went to the training attack recruits. Yes, at night the sky was ripped off by searchlights and the rumble of “Junkers” who flew to bomb Moscow was heard. In mid-July, the estate in Firsanovka was needed as a hospital. Front approaching. It was decided to take out the children. In the distant rear Stalingrad.

Belokurikha. Artek members of the “military” shift with mentor Gury Grigoryevich Yastrebov.
The ship "Pravda" spanked the wheels on the Volga. In Gorky - transfer to the ship "Uritsky". So Stalingrad appeared at the rate, an absolutely peaceful city at the end of July 1941. Is that at the tractor factory now released tanks.
The children were placed in a new school on the right bank while the students were on vacation. But a few days later a new order was received: to load in wagons and go to the Don station of Chir. There, at the dachas belonging to the sanatorium, the camp shift continued.
“The homesickness began to sharpen us, and then one of us would take a big watermelon, cut a message on it with a knife:“ Sweet mommy ”- and throw it in the Don ...”

The camp went to self-service: the guys themselves prepared, cleaned, darned clothes. Artek brigade worked on the collective farm fields. From transport only a couple of oxen: all the trucks worked for the front. About the "Absolute" forgotten: what a day's sleep, when the Germans go to Moscow? Older pioneers literally fell to their feet, returning from the field. The younger ones helped around the kitchen and made wood.Rapidly advanced autumn with prolonged rains. And inexorably approaching the Don steppes front.
Moscow decided to evacuate the camp to Central Asia. Guriy Yastrebov once again ordered a general gathering. Artek's flag was lowered again. The road was coming a long one.
A transit tug with a barge was going along the Don. On it the Artek swam. When moored to Kalach and the guys disembarked, the commandant attacked the pioneers like a scalded man:
- Who are they? From where Quickly hide in the huts, or the German will think that fresh reinforcements have arrived! Do not you see?
The fascist “frame” scout circled in the air, disgustedly. Artek team returned to Stalingrad. Thought transit. Thought for a while.

The pioneers had white shirts and underpants. And caps with the inscription "Artek". The last group, which handed over collective farm property in Nizhne-Chirsk, almost froze on the way in the commercial heatmakers.
Housed in a school, two steps from the Stalingrad tractor. Their "Artek" continued. And on November 7 came the terrible news: the Crimean "Artek" was captured by the Nazis. Wooden hull burned to the ground. The Suuk-Su Palace, where the House of Pioneers, where Chekhov stayed, was destroyed. Barbarously cut down the rarest trees.Unique porcelain figures of the pioneers on the “Alley of Nationalities” were shot from machine guns - a gift from the Dulevo factory. 17 camp staff members died.
And Stalingrad "Artek" lived! The girls worked in hospitals. The boys were on duty on the roof, ready to put out the "lighters".
“The city was constantly bombed. Mostly at night. On the “air-raid” signal, we had to check all the children in a matter of minutes, help them quickly put on warm clothes and take them to the bomb shelter. ”
From the memoirs of Antonina Sidorova, Artek's senior leader
In Stalingrad, met a new, 1942. About Central Asia have forgotten. The senior pioneers came to join the Komsomol. Everyone rushed to the front, but Gury Yastrebov clearly set the task: “In Artek, discipline is above all. For you, the front is here now! ”
And that merciless front was approaching. Over Stalingrad shot down the first German aircraft. Every night they bombed the tractor. Called to the front leader Anatoly Pampa. And in the city marked foci of typhoid. Two pioneers and pioneer leader Nina Khrabrova came down to the insulator ...

In the spring of 1942, the camp was taken to the north of the Stalingrad region, to the village of Frolovo. At parting, the touched head doctor of the military hospital where Artek workers worked, presented his camp with a revolver.
Artek flag raised in the sanatorium "Silver Ponds". Already habitually got involved in the work: they milked the cows, drove the tractor, worked at the power station, mowed hay and cleaned the bread. But in the summer, German air raids began. Fascist went to Don.
Guria Grigoryevich urgently summoned to Moscow. And they ordered to take the camp to Altai.
But how to get to Kamyshin, where the ship Artek was waiting for? The commander of a neighboring military unit proposed:
- I send in Kamyshin for repair tanks. Go train. I can take your guys. True, the armor will fit a bit. And it is dangerous to plant children on top.
The guys were taken to Kamyshin by army trucks, which were miraculously knocked out by the command of the Hawks evacuation hospital. The German was advancing. In the wards waiting for cars wounded soldiers. But still the first flights were taken by Artek people. The head of the hospital understood that children were more important. And the common phrase about the future in the smoke of war is as relevant as it can be now.

Placed "Artek" in the city park, in the premises of the summer theater. The city was also bombed daily. But there were holes in the park, and the pioneers were hiding in them. Finally, we embarked on a steamer, went up the Volga, away from the front. From the air, the steamer was like an island, which abound on the Volga: the upper deck is studded with young birch trees and green branches - a disguise. But she did not always help. The Nazis bombed in front of the children two ships - one that went higher, and the second - downstream. Fate kept the guys. In the evening, the steamer moored to the shore, and the pioneers went to the steppe for the night. What if the raid again?
In Kazan, they worked as porters in the port, waiting for a transfer. I emphasize this again, because all the money earned for the war, including the salaries of the Pioneer Leaguers, was transferred to the defense fund. A total of 116 thousand rubles. With this money it was possible to build an Il-2 attack aircraft, which was called a flying tank.
Stalin reported on the remittance. He sent a telegram to Artek:
“I thank the pioneers of the Artek All-Union Sanatorium Camp named after Molotov for the care of the Red Army. Please accept my warm regards and thanks to the Red Army. I. Stalin.

Through Ufa, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Barnaul, Biysk, the pioneers and Komsomol members finally reached the Altai resort of Belokurikha. On trains and ships, trucks and carts, they traveled 7,750 kilometers. Year and three months on the road. A year and three months of adult labor, overnight stays in warm houses and on bare ground, duty on the roofs under the ruptures of bombs and in hospitals, at the bed of the wounded ...
The camp is located in two buildings of the sanatorium. Immediately began studying at school: the guys are far behind, had to catch up the whole year. In the summer, Siberian and Far Eastern children joined the Artek team. They sent the best and most worthy too. In the camp there were 150 children of the "old call" and as many new ones. But the traditions of the present “Artek” remained those that helped to survive and survive.
January 12, 1945 in the Altai "Artek" solemnly lowered the flag. The longest and most difficult shift in the history of the camp is over.

On April 15, 1944, the soldiers of the Separate Maritime Army liberated the Artek from the Nazis. Baroness Spencer-Churchill, President of the Russian Red Cross Foundation for Assistance and the spouse of the British Prime Minister, during her visit to Artek presented 40-person army tents to the camp. They were immediately smashed on the preserved foundations of the Nizhny. In August 1944, Artek accepted the first shift after the occupation - 300 children of the Crimean partisans.
