Unique passepartout

Last year, my friend visited the country of the pharaohs Egypt and, as expected, brought a souvenir - a decorative papyrus with the image of Tutankhamen, Cleopatra and Nefertiti. Everything is very beautiful, one “but” is just a piece of papyrus and it turned out to be a real problem somewhere to adapt it. After a long rest on the shelf, I decided to give my mind to the gift. Such an image would take bamboo for granted, but where would you get it? In the building stores are sold only in bundles, and not cheap is a pleasure. I didn’t get into my head for a long time and looked into the Internet. The proposal to make bamboo from cardboard rollers (from food film, for example, or from foil, parchment paper) did not please me either, because, as a rule, you always throw out all this treasure, but in vain. And so, with these thoughts, I was looking for a way out. Once I walked past the trash can (yes, and I shouldn’t laugh) and I saw an ordinary plastic water pipe. She happily dragged her home, laundered it, and began working on a mat for the Egyptian papyrus.
For work I needed such materials and tools:
- plastic pipe;
- linen cord;
- corrugated cardboard;
- black fabric (better velvet);
- PVA glue;
- paints;
- putty;
- acrylic lacquer;
- sandpaper "zero";
- saw;
- scissors and a writing-knife;
- brushes.
We take corrugated cardboard and cut the base 5 cm (on each side) larger than papyrus size.
Cut the fabric to size

Cut the fabric to the size of the base with an allowance of 3-4 cm in order to grab the edges of the cardboard.
We paste the fabric on the cardboard

Glue the fabric on the cardboard and set aside to dry. We cut the plastic pipe along in half. Measure and cut off pieces of 5-7 cm more than the base (cardboard).

Now we make imitations of bamboo knots or so-called ribs with linen twine. To do this, we simply wind the twine into a pipe in several layers, which would result in a rather high tubercle, about 0.5 cm in height.

This should be done at a distance of about 15-20 cm, but do not measure the intervals with a ruler. Uneven distance between the ribs will give our bamboo a natural charm.

Next, with putty we ground the pipe, paying special attention to the nodes. If it does not work out very carefully - do not despair, because after drying, we will sand with sandpaper.

After drying and sanding, you need to paint over the edges of the bamboo. This should be done as follows: the first stage is to paint the bamboo with brown paint, let it dry, the second stage, the most prominent element of the knot, should be highlighted with black or dark brown paint.

Then with a lighter paint to cover the whole bamboo and to wipe off the paint with a dry brush in several places. Varnish. To dry

In the meantime, we glue our papyrus on the finished mat (cardboard, pasted over with a cloth). Again, leave to dry and take on the dried bamboo. Now I’ll call the pipes that way because they really look like him. We need to make a frame. To do this, take the twine, and crosswise tie sticks. Tie is very hard!

Here is our frame.

With the help of a needle or sewing, we pierce the mat from all sides at the same distance 0.5 cm from the edge. We pass the frame into the holes of the twine. The result is like this.
